Description

The starting point with any migration project is determining what exactly is to be migrated. On the face of it, this may seem like a straightforward task. Moving from an on-premises or privately hosted environment to Azure is just swapping one infrastructure for another. However, migrating an SAP landscape to Azure presents some unique challenges that can only be adequately addressed if we accurately know the current source state, that is, the existing landscape.

Azure does not support all the hardware, operating systems, and database platforms that SAP runs on. Moving to a new OS or database platform adds another significant dimension to the migration process.  This course investigates which landscape elements need to be considered and how they can affect the deployment design along with the migration strategy. We will also see what tools are available to help with assessing an SAP landscape.

To get the most out of this course, you should have a basic understanding of Azure and SAP.

The main metrics to look at regarding sizing are CPU, memory, disk size and I/O, and network load.

DBA Cockpit for SAP HANA displays various KPIs over a specified timeframe, under load history within the performance monitoring function. You can get historical reports on CPU, memory, disk usage, and other metrics.

SAP Quick Sizer is a web-based tool that supports two sizing models: user-based and throughput-based sizing. Both of these models supply CPU, disk, and memory metrics.

Through the SAP GUI, you can run the OS07N Remote Operating System Activity transaction to display the operating system metrics for all systems and hosts by executing RSHOST1N.

SAP Solution Manager is another centralized application that allows you to monitor and administer, operate and support an enterprise SAP solution by integrating content, tools, and access to SAP systems. 

SAP EarlyWatch Alert is a service that continually analyses essential administrative functions of an SAP environment, raising alerts when metrics step outside normal or safe ranges indicating a critical situation. EarlyWatch Alert reports have two sections that are of particular importance for sizing: Hardware Capacity and Database and ABAP Load Optimization.
