When looking at pricing plans, again it’s best to get the general idea of how pricing tiers work. For virtual machines, pricing depends on features such as CPU cores, Memory, disks, Max IOPs, etc. Standard mechanical hard disks drives or HDDs versus the faster more performant Solid-State Disk drives can significantly affect the price.

Your Basic VM type is an economical option for development workloads, test servers, and other applications that don’t require load balancing, auto-scaling, or memory intensive virtual machines. Standard VM types offer the most flexibility and supports all virtual machine configurations and features.

Your VMs can run different operating systems of course, but you may also Save up to 40% if you own your own Windows license as you’ll be reminded in the Azure portal.

Playing around a bit with the Azure pricing calculator is a simple, easy way to get a feel for the pricing features for different Azure components.
