Hello, and welcome to this course, which is going to introduce you to a variety of database services that are on offer and the differences between them. If you're new to AWS, it can be a little daunting to determine which database service is the right option for your solution.

This course is the first of two courses dedicated to the database fundamentals of AWS. Within this first course, I'll cover the following AWS database services. Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon ElastiCache, and Amazon Neptune. Some of these you may already be familiar with and others might be completely new to you. But don't worry. By the end of this course, you will have an understanding of each. In part two of the series, I will be covering the following services. Amazon Redshift, Amazon Quantum Ledger Database, known as QLDB, Amazon DocumentDB and Amazon Keyspaces.

Before we start, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Stuart Scott and I'm the AWS content and security lead here at Cloud Academy. This course has been designed to help those who are responsible for designing, operating, and optimizing AWS Database solutions. Also, it would be advantageous to anyone who is looking to take the AWS Certified Database Specialty exam. The objective of this course is to provide you with an overall understanding of the different options you have when you're looking for a database solution to host within AWS. And the ability to help you determine which database service would be best suited for your expected workloads.

As a prerequisite to this course, you should have a basic understanding of database architectures and the AWS global architecture. For more information on this, please see our existing blog post here. You should also have a general understanding of the principles behind different EC2 instance families.
