Storage is a central part of any computing infrastructure. Amazon provides many services on the cloud to replace traditional, on-premises storage systems, ranging from short-term storage for running instances who are doing computation on smal batches of data, up to long-term archives saved in redundant disks or even tapes.

In this course, the Computer Engineer and Cloud Expert Mohammad Ali Tabibi will give you an overview of the AWS storage services like EBS, S3, Glacier and Storage Gateway, to better understand what they are for, how they are built, and how they can be best used.

Who should take this course

Being a beginner course, no prerequisites are needed to understand the concepts of this course. Nevertheless, having some knowledge of what AWS is, and having some experience with the Linux Command Line Interface, might be helpful to follow along the course.

Welcome to the storage on AWS course. In this course we present an overview of the storage solutions on Amazon web services. Amazon web services provides low-cost data storage with high durability and availability. Pay-as-you-go pricing with no commitment means greater flexibility and agility. With AWS high securities available at no extra cost. AWS offers storage choices for backup, archiving and disaster recovery as well as block file and object storage. Developers in businesses around the globe rely on Amazon web services for block storage, file storage, backups, archiving and disaster recovery. For example, thanks to its elasticity feature, Nasdaq OMEX chose AWS because they needed to indefinitely store and protect a rapidly-growing amount of information. AWS storage can scale as need. Customers like Toshiba medical systems and NASA have trusted AWS storage solutions because security of storage and durability of data are their major prerequisites. With a respect to cost, a model by Forrester reveals a significant advantage compared to on-premises solutions, with up to 74% of savings in the cloud-based approach. Storage is a primary service of the AWS platform and it comes in five variants: Amazon S3, Amazon EBS, Amazon Glacier, AWS Import/Export and AWS Storage Gateway. Each serves a different purpose. For object storage, Amazon S3 is endlessly scalable and durable storage. With regard to block storage, Amazon EBS provides storage volumes for Amazon EC2. Long term archive storage is the aim of Amazon Glacier, a low cost storage service that provide secure and durable storage for data archiving and backup.

Cloud Gateway storage is the purpose of AWS storage gateway which connects your on-premises IT environment with the AWS Cloud. Amazon storage services have many different features. Unlike physical storage which requires capacity planning in pre-purchasing AWS storage offers pay-as-you-go pricing, you only pay for the data you store. AWS security policy and certifications meet high level standards required by customers in large enterprises and government agencies. AWS supports several methods for loading and retrieving data including a direct network connection with AWS direct connect and the AWS import/export service, where Amazon loads data to and from physical media. AWS storage gateway automatically backs up application data. Nobody likes having their data relocated to unknown destinations. With AWS you can choose the AWS region to store your data into optimize latency, minimize costs or address regulatory requirements. Objects stored in a region never leave that region unless you transfer it. Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier automatically distribute data across multiple data centers and they're designed to provide 99.99% durability. AWS storage services provide a choice of storage options that allow you to tier your data according to your accessibility and safety needs, Amazon S3 provides primary object storage with 11 nines of durability. Amazon S3 RRS offers secondary storage and Amazon Glacier is fit for cold archival, . For block storage, you can choose your performance level with provisioned IOP storage for Amazon RDS or Amazon EBS for Amazon EC2.

Companies typically overpay for data archiving. Amazon Glacier is a low cost storage service providing storage for data archiving and backup. With Amazon Glacier you can reliably store either large or small amounts of data for as little as one cent per gigabyte per month. For remote and small office application data, AWS storage gateway enables you to upload to the AWS Cloud for cost-effective backup, file sharing and rapid disaster recovery.

It's an easier way to protect application data with seamless backups to AWS storage. If you need a scalable primary storage, Amazon S3 is a distributed object store designed for mission-critical and primary data storage, with an easy to use web interface. Amazon S3 is more agile, flexible and geo-redundant than on-premises SAN or NAS. In terms of inexpensive archiving, large data sets can be a business' anchor. They consume ever-increasing amounts of expensive storage, require additional backup media and they're difficult to move or share.

Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier provide cost-effective and durable storage on demand, for backup and recovery AWS helps simplify the backup and recovery environment for your enterprise. It's quite simple and you can manage and maintain your services easily.
