What is a database?

Firstly, let’s examine the concept of the word ‘database’ so that we can understand the various references to it.

When people refer to a 'database' they mean one of three things:

  1. A LOGICAL COLLECTION of tables (and other objects) that store data.

This is the definition of what a database really is. An example of this is LandRegistry.

  1. A SOFTWARE application that manages databases, stores data, and handles queries, called DBMS which stands for Database Management System.

Some examples of DBMS are Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL Server.

  1. A HARDWARE that has DBMS installed, called a database server.

An example of this is your computer.

Next, let’s look at what are the main types of databases that are in use.
