Excel resource videos
- [Instructor] Hello, and welcome to this Excel session. In this video, you'll learn what verification and validation are and how to carry out these two processes on your data. Verification and validation are two ways of checking that the data you've entered is correct. Verification is a manual process and validation involves automating the process of verification by creating some rules in the Excel spreadsheet to restrict data entry. So let's start with data validation. First, select the columns you'd like to validate. Here we have four data categories, A, B, C, and D, and we don't want any other values entered in this column. Go to the data tab, here you can find the data validation tool. From here, select list and choose your list. This will create a drop down for each cell in this column. Select, Okay. Now there's a drop down in each cell where you have to select the value. If you try to enter something different, you'll receive an error message from Excel. And that's the validation process. We've created some rules to restrict data entry. Verification on the other hand is when you manually check and filter the data. As you can see, there are some blank cells in this column. As the data analyst, it's up to you to decide whether to use a dummy value to fill those blank cells or to remove them. So, for example, if we know that the price 48,901 belongs to category D, we can easily type D here. Or we can simply remove the blank cells. And that's it for this video, thanks for watching, and we'll see you in the next session.
