- [Jeremy Cook] The const keyword is used to define constants. Constants, once declared and initialized, cannot be reassigned at any time afterwards.
Constants can be declared anywhere that a variable is declared, and can be declared as any data type, such as string, int, Boolean, etc. The data type doesn't need to be provided, since, again, the compiler can simply infer the data type at compile time, as it does on line 12 in the given example. Constants are scoped, that is, they exist only within the scope that they were declared within. This can be seen in the given example, again, where attempting to print out the color constant on line 23 would result in a compile time error, since it was declared within the scope of the if statement. Running this example prints out the expected values 10,000 and CloudAcademy.
Therefore, in summary, you've just observed how to declare a constant using the const keyword, that constants are scoped, they only exist within the scope that they were declared within, constants are typed, constants must have a defined value at the time of declaration, and constants cannot be reassigned anytime after the initial declaration.
