Transcript

This course on the Vim editor. I'm really glad you decided to come along with me on this journey to Vim mastery. But before we get started, I want to talk to you about the path you're going to be following during this course. In the first section of the course you'll quickly learn how to start Vim, make some simple edits, and save your changes. This is the least amount of information you need to get started with Vim. Next, you'll start to learn how to think in Vim. When you're able to do this then you don't have to remember dozens and dozens of commands. You'll learn just a few, simple patterns that you'll be able to use over and over again to do almost anything you want to do with Vim. From there you'll learn how to use the built-in Vim help system. This way you'll be self-sufficient, even beyond the end of this course. In the section on transforming and substituting text, you'll start out by making some simple replacements and then you'll move on to perform global substitutions in many files at once. Next, you'll learn about some really powerful and advanced Vim features, such as text, objects and macros. Along the way, you'll also learn about several Vim settings and how to customize Vim to work best for your particular situation. You'll also be exposed to several different techniques that can make editing and viewing multiple files at once easy. Finally, we'll wrap up by talking about the visual or graphical user interface versions of Vim and how to make the most out of the features only available to you when you're using a graphical version of Vim.
