Introducing SCORM to Create Custom Content With Ease

Your infrastructure is custom-built to fit your organization’s unique needs. Shouldn’t your tech training be, too? Capturing all the nuances of your production environment within your cloud training helps teams perform with accuracy and precision in the real world.

That’s why we released Content Engine over two years ago, so you can build custom training material that’s highly specific to your organization, with no additional time, set up, or costs required! Today, we’re excited to announce a brand-new feature within Content Engine for even more customization functionality: support for SCORM content. With SCORM, you can quickly create personalized training that’s also highly interactive, easy to manage, and easy to scale across teams.

What is SCORM?

Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is the most commonly used standard for eLearning content. It allows Learning Management Systems (LMSs) to build and render collaborative resources that work seamlessly across multiple systems. SCORM is extremely versatile and facilitates high levels of interaction within the content for increased engagement. A SCORM package is the set of files that are exported from an existing LMS. This package can then be imported into other systems that support SCORM, such as Cloud Academy.

Cloud Academy has always supported the embedding of any text or image file and the following specific document types: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .mp4, .mov. Now, by adding support for SCORM, you can enhance your user experience even further with fully interactive content in a matter of minutes, so you can easily validate the hands-on skills that are most common to your specific use cases.

How do I create SCORM content?

Most LMSs support creating SCORM-compliant content and exporting it as a SCORM package. To add your SCORM packages to Cloud Academy, just upload the file within the resources section of your dashboard, just as you would any other custom resource. Be sure to select the ‘SCORM content’ tab in the uploader (as pictured below), and you’re good to go!

Once your SCORM package is finished processing, it can be accessed as a standalone training resource or as part of a Learning Path or Training Plan. These tools guide users through a specific training journey that includes a combination of courses, hands-on labs, and exams. They contain comprehensive content related to certain job roles, technology domains, and skill levels so users can become highly proficient in their area of expertise. You can add your SCORM content to any existing Learning Path within Cloud Academy, or you can create a new custom Learning Path from scratch with the labs, playgrounds, and quizzes of your choice, so you gain full customization on multiple levels. You can assign your custom Learning Paths or Training Plans to individuals, teams, and company-wide, and build accountability with due dates, auto-reminders, and visibility into progress over time.

How does it work for my end-users?

By leveraging SCORM, your external content is now displayed directly inside of the Cloud Academy platform, so users won’t need to jump between their Cloud Academy account and your third party LMS platform when training. With everything co-located in one place, this creates a more enjoyable experience for learning. Learners will gain access to hands-on, fully interactive training, and content can be expanded full screen for a more immersive experience.

Will it track my users’ progress?

Cloud Academy Enterprise empowers teams with rich analytics into training on the individual, team, or organization level in real-time. The platform tracks the time users spend on the content, and it knows exactly what was completed. If a user needs to exit their learning session then return to a SCORM resource later, they’ll pick up right where they left off. This is especially useful for longer courses which may include multiple chapters. To track the user’s progress inside of the Learning Path dashboard, as we do for our own Cloud Academy courses, be sure the SCORM package is a SCORM 2004 4th Edition file.

Using SCORM within Content Engine provides a simple way to let your users consume your external content inside of Cloud Academy. This allows you to take advantage of the platform’s skill engine and analytics dashboard even when your users are not consuming Cloud Academy content. You’ll get visibility into skill profiles and get updates as new skills are acquired using your custom resources.

Personalized training for personalized outcomes

Whether you’re getting new hires up to speed on your tech stack, preparing your teams for an upcoming cloud migration, or upskilling your staff with the latest security certifications, Content Engine provides an easy way to scale custom training for any use case. You can even create your own internal certifications and labs!

When teams are trained on the specifics of your security requirements, firewalls, custom integrations, product features, processes, and more, there’s no doubt that personalized content plays an essential role in your team’s ability to perform their best.
