Content Delivery Networks simply delivers high-bandwidth content hosted in Azure or elsewhere to end users. Much of this data is typically static data such as images. The different pricing tiers include providers such as Verizon and Akamai. Only Verizon can do both Standard and Premium tiers.



The general idea is to improve the experience for users, especially users located far from the datacenter hosting your application. A few scenarios where CDNs come into play are streaming video files on demand, handling the growing load on IoT based application solutions, and delivering public static and shared content to devices such as mobile phones and tablets.

To configure your CDN endpoint you typically give it a unique name with a .azureedge.net suffix and specify the origin type. The protocol uses HTTP and HTTPS.
